‘Big Mick an’ Wee Mickey are working on them new houses behind the Wagon an’ Horses,’ Bridie announced as she entered Kitty’s kitchen one Friday morning at the beginning of July.

‘That’s handy,’ Kitty replied as she filled a basket with the baps and pies she had baked for the café. ‘They should do the weekend, what with customers being few an’ far between,’ she said glumly.

‘Aye, it picked up over Easter but it’s slacked right off again,’ Bridie sighed. ‘I’m just thankful my men have a job to go to even if folks like Beth’s dad gives ’em stick whenever he sees ’em. Fancy him objectin’ to rat holes being pulled down an’ lovely clean houses put up in their place.’ She pulled a face.

‘Aye, he was giving off stink to me the other day. He says it’ll lower the tone of the district, if they move folks out of the slums in the city centre and dump them on us. I soon put him straight, the miserable old so-and-so.’

Bridie laughed. ‘I bet he didn’t like that – but then, he never looks happy even though Beth’s never done running, taking him meals an’ doing his washing.’

‘Beth’s always felt responsible for him even though he led her a dog’s life afore she married Blair. He’s a fortunate man is Walter. I told him, times are changin’ an we’ve got to accept it,’ Kitty said. ‘Then he started giving off about the Mullers.’

‘They seem all right, even if they are Germans,’ said Bridie, picking up the basket ready to leave. ‘Big Mick says Germany’s goin’ to cause a lot of trouble in the world if that Adolf Hitler gets his way.’

‘Aye, John thinks the same. It’s just one worry after another.’ Kitty sighed heavily. ‘I’ll be along later. Not that you’ll need me, but I like to show me face to the few customers we still have.’

After Bridie had gone, Kitty stood at the sink, thinking about the Mullers. Molly was down there now, helping Ursula Muller fill in an application form for work in one of the city’s hospitals, but Kitty had her suspicions that her daughter was more interested in Heinz Muller than his sister. Ah, well. Molly wasn’t a child and it was only natural she should be interested in the opposite sex. She’d been on a few dates with an ambulance driver but that seemed to have fizzled out and he’d not been mentioned recently. Heinz Muller had. Kitty was aware that Molly’s kind heart was drawn to someone who needed care, but did she want her daughter to fall in love with a man tied to a wheelchair? She didn’t think she did. Hopeful that Heinz was just a passing fancy, she attended to her chores, at the same time mulling over an idea that she had been toying with for some time.
